Manage a Microsoft Office Program Window

Microsoft Office Suite applications have three ways to manage their windows: 1.) the Application Icon, 2.) Control Boxes, and 3.) the Taskbar.

Application Icon

On the top left-hand corner of the Microsoft Office 2003 Title Bar is an Application Icon. Using Microsoft Word as an example, that application icon appears as a “blue W on a stack of papers. Click that icon, and a short control menu provides options for you to do the following:

  • Restore a window to a previous size
  • Move or size a window
  • Minimize, maximize, or close an application window

Control Boxes

On the top right-hand corner of the Microsoft Office 2003 Title Bar are three boxes that allow a user to minimize, maximize, or close an application window. Putting the cursor on any of the four sides of a window allows you to increase or decrease the window size. Pointing the mouse on the Title Bar and holding the mouse button down while moving the mouse will move the window to any part of the screen you prefer.

The Taskbar

Using the Taskbar performs these same tasks easier than you think. Right-click the active taskbar button on the Taskbar to display window pane commands. If the window is in the full screen display, you will see the following commands: Restore, Move, Size, Minimize, Maximize and Close. The Move, Size, and Maximize commands are colored gray, showing these commands as disabled for the full screen view. Click the Restore command and the Move, Size, Minimize, Maximize and Close commands become available, disabling the Restore command.

Right-clicking a Taskbar button displays the following commands:

Size command

As soon as you press any one of the arrow keys, the cursor will jump to that respective border on the window. Pressing the left arrow puts the cursor on the left border. Pressing the right arrow puts the cursor on the right border. Moving the left and right arrows will shrink or expand the window.

Move command

As soon as you press any one of the arrow keys, the cursor will move the window around the screen to your movements of the arrow keys. Press the Esc or Enter keys to exit the Move command.

Minimize

Collapses the window out of sight, but keeps the application available

Maximize

Expands the window into a full screen view

Close

Exits the application window
